The original village of  Kintamani was down in the crater but was wiped out by  a violet eruption in 1917. It killed thousand of people and destroyed more than 60.000 homes before the lava flow stopped at the entrance to the village’s main temple.Taking this as a good omen, the village was rebuilt, but Batur Mt. erupted again in 1926. This time, the lava flow covered everything but the loftiest  temple shrine. Fortunately, the Dutch  administration anticipated the eruption  and evacuated the village (partly by force), so very few lives were lost. The village was relocated up on the crater rim, and surviving shrine was also moved up there and placed in the new temple, Pura Ulun Danu. Spiritually, Batur Mt. is the second most important mountain in Bali ( Agung Mt. out ranks it) so this temple is of considerable importance. Penelokan Village will be the best to view of the Mount Batur and Lake Batur while having your lunch.
