1. Legian Area

Jalan Legian (Legian Street) is the primary walking street of the second most popular beach resort area after Kuta, lined with a good variety of shops, bars, hotels and clubs. The street connects Kuta and Seminyak. Several alleys, including Poppies Lane (I and II) and Jalan Sahadewa (aka 'Garlic Lane') branch off to the beach from this street. Footpaths on both sides offer great walks for both shoppers by day, and night owls after sunset.

As a walking street, Jalan Legian is where you’ll find most of the area's daytime shopping and dining spots. Many small art shops let you hop from one to another while practicing your bargaining skills, and for fixed price shopping (with endless ‘discount’ promos) there are many brand outlets such as Rip Curl and Surfer Girl which have their flagship stores here. Massage and reflexology parlours also welcome you in for pampering breaks.

Near the southern end stands the ‘Ground Zero’ memorial, a central Legian landmark (attraction and sightseeing options in Legian are scarce), and where many visitors take their holiday photos. The end of the shopping street turns right towards Kuta Beach, and the length of Jalan Pantai Kuta will then take you full circle north to Legian’s Jalan Melasti, where you can find a different set of shopping choices at the Merta Nadi Art Market

2. Kuta Art Market
Start From : 09.30 - 10.30

Kuta Art Market is a small beachside bazaar-like complex where Bali souvenirs, arts and handicraft items are sold. The compact marketplace is easily located at the end of the Jalan Bakungsari one-way thoroughfare, adjacent to the Kuta Sidewalk and just before Jalan Kartika Plaza Street. Here, visitors who stroll along the street as well as from the sands of Kuta Beach will come across the market.

Referred to locally as ‘Pasar Seni Desa Adat Kuta’ or the ‘Art Market of Kuta’, the place comprises six main shop-houses and a long building with many different stalls. The shops sell a wide range of items and Bali curios, such as Bali surfboard and guitar-shaped fridge magnets, key chains, beer holders, placemats, faux leather shoes and sandals, Bali print T-shirts and colourful sarongs and fabrics.

From the art market’s street side north, rows of modern shops and various international brands (mostly surf clothing and sports apparel) the likes of Quiksilver, Billabong and Rip Curl as well as other fashion labels line up through Kuta Square.

Kuta Art Market serves as a shopping oasis as it is located out of sight from the traffic and sidelined by the many modern shops in its adjacent boulevards. It’s perfect for visitors who do not have much time to hunt for souvenirs in the island’s other more established art markets, however prices can be higher. Nearly all of the items sold here are similar to the goods that dominate the art markets of Ubud and Sukawati. The items are mostly sourced from the same cottage industries and suppliers in Gianyar, as well as local craftsmen in Kuta and the surrounding areas. Bargaining skills will play an important role on your shopping here.

Good to Know about Kuta Art Market When bargaining at the Kuta Art Market, rule of thumb is to act polite and friendly with shopkeepers as it is sort of a game, and you can actually make new friends from these 'soft battles’. Make sure you check the quantity and quality of each of your items before paying the negotiated price. The art market is surrounded by various beachside food stalls selling cold drinks and restaurants selling cuisines at various price ranges. Most of the restaurants are located across the Jalan Kartika Plaza, along the Kuta sidewalk, southward from the art market. Always try to have small Rupiah change on hand. There are several money changers around the Kuta Art Market, however using them can be a tricky, if not daunting, affair. Use only authorised money changers or a bank. You can also change your money at your hotel, although at normally higher rates. The small, unauthorised street booths, despite being labelled as ‘authorised’ should be last resort. If you must, always re-count your money twice in front of the dealer and ask for any missing banknotes.

Opening Hours: 08:00 - 22:00 Location: Jalan Bakung Sari, Kuta How to get there: Where Jalan Bakung Sari and Jalan Kartika Plaza streets meet. An easy stroll along the beachside footpath 15m south from the Balawista lifeguard watchtower on Kuta Beach.

3. Kuta Beach

Kuta Beach is located on the western side of the island's narrow isthmus and is considered Bali's most famous beach resort destination. Kuta Beach is also minutes away from the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Tuban. The nearby resorts of Tuban, Legian and Seminyak are all within close walking distance.

Once a simple, rustic and quiet fishing village, Kuta Beach has witnessed a transformation over the past years due to the rise of various accommodations, dining and shopping options. The rapid growth owes much to visitors, beachcombers and art lovers from nearby Australia. Expatriates also helped pioneer surfing in Kuta, as well.

Although a rather frenzied traffic scene has become commonplace here, Kuta Beach continues to attract thousands of visitors every year with its unique charm. During the peak season from July to August and the holiday season for Christmas and New Year, Kuta Beach is regularly fully-booked by travellers looking forward to a pleasant and affordable Bali escape.
